Feature Project: Transit Station in Minneapolis

MOSAIC & PAINT COLLABORATION: Yup, you read that right. Incorporating mosaics into painted murals is a dynamic way to add dimensionality, texture, interest and viewer engagement.

Our public art collaboration with muralist and lead artist of Kada Goalen of Kada Creative wrapped up this summer, and the result is stunning. Kada won a large public art commission that included us adding mosaic accents to her inspiring painted design at the I-35W & Lake Street bus rapid transit station. Here are final photos.

We fabricated and installed over 100 mosaic “feathers” to bird images on four enormous pillars.

The pillars flank the transit station’s main entrances on both sides of Lake Street in Minneapolis.

For durability, we primarily used hearty recycled glass tile for many of the feathers.

We also included mirror accents to add reflection and engagement as pedestrians walk by.

Kada and Stacia, working their on-site magic. Stacia even got to do a little mural painting during Kada’s community paint day event.

New Public Art News

WE WON IN FROSTBURG, MD: We’re incredibly honored to have been selected to create one of two substantial public art projects at Frostburg State University in Maryland, in collaboration with the Maryland Public Art Initiative and The Universities of Shady Grove. The work will be installed next year.

Here’s the final design, inspired by western Maryland’s geology and fossils, FSU’s bobcat mascot (footprints), and the Appalachian Mountains.

Progress Report: Worship Space in Virginia

FABRICATION UPDATE: We’re making great progress on the vibrant, 40-foot-long story mosaic for an East Coast church. This private commission is requiring thousands and thousands of hand-cut pieces.

The mosaic’s focal point will be this large cross made of ceramic tile and radiating background light made of Italian glass tile.

Look at the pretty gold-leaf tile accents on this dove.

“100 Years,” 48” x 24”, from our available work, was accepted into this year’s juried Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibit. The mosaic is made from deconstructed and upcycled wood: IKEA furniture, vintage block lettering, driftwood, gym flooring and more.

In the News

It’s a winner! The Minnesota Art Center selected Stacia’s “100 Years” wooden mosaic for the Center’s Sculpture Award at the Minnesota State Fair.

Minneapolis Star Tribune ran a front-page feature story on the Minneapolis Bus Rapid Transit Station public art project. Read story and see mosaics up close.

Keeping in Shape for Mosaics: Stacia completed her third sprint triathlon (a back-to-back swim, bike, run) race of the summer.
