Public Art News
Montana State University. What a thrill to attend the Oct. 16 grand opening ceremony of the spectacular, new American Indian Hall at MSU. We had to keep final photos of our 18-foot-high mosaic installation – done with the assistance of three Native American student mentees – top secret until after the ceremony. But the wait is finally over! Introducing “Fire and Water,” made with ceramic tile, 98% recycled glass tile, stained glass and mirror.
Watch this one-minute video of the main-entrance column, which features intertwining elements of fire and water visible from all four entry points to the artwork.
This photo shows how the design is replicated on two sides of the column, with a feather-like image created by the black field tile.
The colorful rectangular tiles are thick, 98% recycled glass, which helped the building achieve LEED Platinum, Level 4, certification (the only such building in Montana).
Huge thanks to our three, wonderful MSU student mentees – Shayenne, Ryann, and Georgeline – who assisted with the week-long installation, including siting the actual mosaic.

Up Next: La Crosse (Wisconsin) Center. Fabrication is underway on a large mixed-media mosaic installation for the La Crosse convention center. My favorite aspect: Design collaboration with Wisconsin artist Josie Lee, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. The artwork will beautify the Center’s renovation and help educate viewers that La Crosse is the original ancestral land of the Ho-Chunk people.
Our design celebrates the beautiful scenery and Indigenous artistry of the La Crosse area.
First, we trace and cut substrate into big sections. Once our tile order arrives, Stacia will begin the mosaic work.

New Project Announcement
Central Lutheran Church (Minneapolis, MN). This historic church in downtown Minneapolis is truly a piece of art in itself. We’ve been invited to add a mosaic touch to a large baptismal font, carved from a single piece of Cold Spring granite. Currently, we’re in the design phase of modifying the three, overflowing bowls. Collaborators include St. Paul Fabricating & Design and ESG Architects & Design.
Below: The mosaic colors will complement the breath-taking stained-glass windows throughout the sanctuary.

Healing Artwork. Unfortunately, the pandemic nixed our plans to do a mosaic demonstration at the Minnesota State Fair, along with other members of the Minnesota Mosaic Guild. But here’s a mosaic we did a few years ago that features icon places of St. Paul, including the fair.
Can you spot the State Fair Ferris wheel? This mosaic (8’ x 4’; glass, tile, mirror, found objects) appears in the main entrance of Children’s Hospital and Clinics of MN, St. Paul. See fun close-up shots here.

Question: Do you do all the work yourself?
Answer: No. We are a two-person studio, and we also collaborate with other nonmosaic artists and installers, as needed. However, Stacia does all of the actual mosaic fabrication.
